Welcoming Refugees in Rural Communities through the Generations, People in Motion secures National Lottery support

Working with Collar and Tie (C&T), People in Motion are excited to have received a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant of £10,000 for an exciting new project focusing on Welcoming Refugees in Rural Communities through the Generations. This project will take place across Herefordshire and Worcestershire, and has all been made possible by money raised by National Lottery players.

Looking to this year’s Refugee Week theme; ‘You, me and those who came before’, People in Motion wish to celebrate refugee stories from those who have settled in Herefordshire and Worcestershire over the years to preserve this crucial part of our history. People in Motion will be creating 4 short films; ‘Those who came’, ‘Those that helped them’, ‘The changes they’ve made’, and ‘Looking to the future’.

Community events will be held at the beginning of September in Malvern, Hereford and Bromsgrove, inviting people to come and get involved in this new project. People in Motion would love to hear from people who came to settle in Herefordshire and Worcestershire in order to seek a safer life, those that have been involved in welcoming refugees into their communities and people who would be interested in getting involved.

Supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project will enable memories to be captured that could have otherwise be forgotten or pushed aside. People in Motion want to showcase the great contributions refugees have made and will continue to do so in the areas and communities of Herefordshire and Worcestershire. This project will be run by local people, who will be involved in the filming, production and sharing of the films that are created, who will also get the opportunity to meet new people, have some important conversations and celebrate our heritage in welcoming refugees.

Commenting on the award, Kirsty Fraser Chairperson of People in Motion said: “We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to National Lottery players and are very excited that the project will celebrate both refugees and those rural communities that work hard to welcome people throughout Hereford and Worcestershire.

Naomi Wood, Lead Animateur at C&T said: “It is so important that these stories aren’t lost, they’re a part of our contemporary history. Through the project we want to use film and modern technology to help elevate these stories and give them the platform they deserve. We are so excited to be a part of this project and we hope the films bring about understanding and respect for these communities and the volunteers who supported their journey.”
